RILPAC Position on Immigration Policy

The Rhode Island Latino Political Action Committee
(RILPAC) is pleased with the decision of the United States Senate
Judiciary Committee to approve immigration reform legislation
that will allow for the legalization and eventual path to citizenship
for the nation’s estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.
The nation’s current immigration policy is in desperate need of
reform and the decision of the Judiciary Committee to approve the
bipartisan Kennedy-McCain immigration reform bill is a step in
the right direction.

Conversely, RILPAC strongly opposes the immigration bill passed
in the United States House of Representatives, introduced by
Representative James Sensenbrenner, that will criminalize
undocumented immigrants and make it a felony for any
organization or person that knows of or assists an individual who
is in the United States unlawfully.  This bill is unjust and
fundamentally unfair to the millions of hardworking immigrants
and individuals and organizations—churches and community
agencies included—which help and serve community members
regardless of resident status.

We support a comprehensive immigration reform effort that
effectively addresses the issues of legalization, path to citizenship,
reunification of families and future flow of workers that will
ensure a safer migration process while providing for the needs of
our economy, our workforce and our communities.

RILPAC urges Senator majority leader Frist to expeditiously allow
for a vote of the Kennedy-McCain bill in the full Senate and
encourage all Rhode Islanders to contact Senator Chafee and
Senator Reed and urge them to support the Kennedy-McCain
immigration bill.
